What Can Be Improved in Toronto Emergency Medical Services Response

There is something that really have caught my attention these months. Many times I see City of Toronto Emergency Medical Services, EMS, vehicles responding to the emergency. But, what I found wrong is that the driver drives fast through the downtown, midtown streets without lights and sirens on. Only when the vehicle approaches an intersection, the driver turns the sirens and lights on. But, it should not be like that. The sirens are designed to have intensity that can be heard at least one block around and ahead, so the other traffic participants can adjust their speeds and be ready to give the approaching EMS vehicle much needed space and right of way to go through. It is wrong to silently drive EMS vehicle with speeds much greater than the surrounding traffic when responding to emergencies, just because there seem to be no cars ahead. That's double mistake. First, the EMS driver does not warn in advance the other drivers who also approach next intersection, hence making it dangerous and possibly wasting precious time necessary for the emergency. Second mistake is, driving at higher speeds in the city, without emergency lights and sirens on, endangers other traffic participants who have no advance warning that dangerously accelerating vehicle is approaching.

The drivers of EMS vehicles should follow the rules, as simple as that. Otherwise they are greatly endangering lives of persons in emergency and of traffic participants. The rules are simple. Put the emergency lights and sirens on, all the time when responding to an emergency, and not only when you are approaching intersections.

Novel Burglar Deterrent Methods

On December 15, 2011, Toronto Police released details about rush of burglaries (CP24) here. In addition to releasing details about the investigation dubbed Prybar, police has discussed a new crime-prevention initiative for businesses to protect themselves from burglaries and thefts. If you want to prevent burglaries of your apartment, one of the novel method is Burglar Deterrent CD, Anti-theft Home Occupancy Sounds on CD.

Washington Post: Every 14.6 seconds a burglary takes place in the U. S. http://www.washingtonpost.com/burglary-graphics.

Toronto company Super Deterrent is distributing its product, burglar deterrent CD, since 2009. Read more about the benefits of home occupancy sounds in the battle against opportunistic burglars.

Do you plan to travel next month? Or, next week? Do you want your home to be safer while you are away?

An apartment or a house that presents itself as unoccupied is far more likely to be targeted by burglars than one which is properly secured. Absence of noise will attract burglars. While you cannot be home all of the time, you can use a home security solution that works for you around the clock. It is easy to use burglar deterrent CD, with recorded household sounds, that fills in your home with everyday noises and instantly alarms the burglar that someone is in. If you remove opportunity, you will prevent the burglary.

This innovative device, that greatly reduces chance of burglary, has been on the market for sometime. Several manufacturers already sell product online and in home security stores (just Google the phrase “burglar deterrent CD”).

The main advantage of this audio recording is that it’s capable of creating a realistic impression that your home is occupied. It works best for apartments and condominiums. It is one of the most convincing things you can do to make your home unattractive to opportunistic burglars when you are away. The sounds are nonintrusive, crisp, random household sounds that come from kitchen, bathroom, living room. There are also well designed silence intervals  that effectively contrast with, and accentuate sounds that come after. Moreover, CD lasts one hour (obviously, a CD Player option “Continuous Play” will be chosen for non stop run), with variety of noises selected, so burglar doesn’t have even the slightest chance to notice any pattern.

The volume intensity of the tracks on these CDs is chosen so that it does not disturb your neighbors. These recorded sounds can not be heard through the walls in the same manner your neighbor can not hear your spoon or fork hitting the plate during the dinner. Yet, these sounds can be easily and clearly heard if someone listens outside the front door.

Playing burglar deterrent CD is easy. Just put it into your favorite CD player and chose the volume intensity between 30% and 40% of the maximum value. Then select “Repeat All” or “Continuous Play” so it plays non stop. You can test it in front of the door to hear and see the effect and chose the best speaker orientation and sound volume.

Before you go on vacation, and after you review your home security checklist (many excellent checklists can be found online), do what all police departments recommend. Make your home look and sound occupied. By playing a burglar deterrent CD you will achieve a lot in increasing the level of security of your home.

You can always use burglar deterrent CD in combination with other devices. The most effective combination is burglar deterrent CD and automatic light switch timer that turns lights on and off throughout the day and night.

Maple Leaf Gardens Loblaws Opens in Downtown Toronto

Maple Leaf Gardens is now home of Loblaws. The gourmet grocery store is huge, but considering how many new condominiums are built in the neighborhood, I think the size is justified.

The store has everything, and, of course everything is big. Many shelves, excellent selection of cheese, since there is a Wall of Cheese, six meters, or 18 feet, high glass tower holding huge variety of cheese, available by the full wheel, half wheel, or chunk.

The main entrance to the store is from the corner of Church and Carlton Street. The address is 60 Carlton Street, Toronto. Store hours are

Mon-Sun 7:00am - 11:00pm.

Germany-Greece in Talks Over Massive $29 billion Solar Project

Here is the article from Renewable Energy World http://goo.gl/ZBKpg

The project aims to reach 10 GW of capacity, which would rival it with the 10.2 GW produced by Public Power Corporation, Greece's main electricity company.

Germany-Greece $29 billion dollar project should benefit many solar firms, of course. Ontario R&D based ARISE Technologies (TSX:APV, also trades on Frankfurt Exchange), with the actual manufacturing plants in Germany, may be in an excellent position to benefit from the Germany-Greece project.

The Company has three divisions: Photovoltaic (PV) Cell, PV Silicon and PV Systems. The PV Cell Division manufactures PV cells. The PV Silicon Division is using a method to produce silicon at 7N+ high-purity (99.99999 % purity) for PV cell applications, based on a chemical vapor deposition process. The PV Systems Division provides PV solutions for solar farms and rooftop installations. The PV Cell division is developing a high-efficiency (20%+) thin-film on silicon wafer heterojunction PV solar cell based on its process technology. ARISE owns a United States manufacturing process patent (DC saddle-field deposition) related to depositing thin-films on substrates.

New TTC's subway trains on the Yonge-University-Spadina Subway

Had a chance today to ride the new TTC Rocket from Dundas to Bloor station.
The cars are clean, more spacious, but I think it's because of less seats. Bright inside, clear warning announcements, although I've found door chimes a bit too loud. Passengers can move between cars freely (see the pics).

The TTC electronic info map inside cars did not work. It should show where the train is, i.e. which station. Also, the audio announcements, what station is next did not work either. However, the train is quieter, and the ride is smoother.
